Victoria Littlejohn Studio

United States, 1970-1979

This charming ceramic wall art by Victoria Littlejohn, crafted in the 1970s, is a striking representation of Mid-Century Modern artistry. Featuring a beautifully glazed ceramic chicken mounted on a woven fabric backdrop and framed in walnut wood, this piece showcases Littlejohn’s signature handcrafted aesthetic. The rich earth tones and bold textures bring a dynamic, tactile quality to the artwork, making it a perfect addition to any collector’s space. Preserved in very good original condition, it captures the warmth and organic appeal of handcrafted ceramics from the era.

A fun historical fact: Victoria Littlejohn was a celebrated ceramic artist known for her playful and expressive designs. She was part of the California Clay Movement, a post-war artistic shift that pushed ceramics beyond functional pottery and into the realm of fine art. This piece is a wonderful example of that movement, blending craftsmanship with artistic storytelling.

The Restoration Record

Everything we touched, and everything we left alone

Sixty-four hours of bench time by two craftsmen in our Hyperion Avenue workshop. Period-correct methods and materials throughout.

Frame fully disassembled, joints cleaned of old glue and re-set with hide glue. One rear stretcher replaced with salvaged period teak, grain-matched.

Stripped by hand, sanded through 120/180/240/320 grit, then three coats of Danish oil cut back between coats. No lacquer, no filler, no stain.

New jute webbing over the original beech rails; horsehair and natural latex pad; Kvadrat wool bouclé in undyed oat.

Maker's stamp, original brass fittings and the patina on the arm caps — the marks that prove the piece lived.
